FAQs / Help

When are we open for visits?

Low-season:
Wednesday – Sunday 10am > 5pm (last entry 4pm)
Closed Mondays & Tuesdays

High-season:
7 days a week – 10am > 5pm (last entry 4pm)

How long does a visit take?

Walking around the caverns usually takes about 25-30 minutes – longer if you are interested in the mining history and would like to take in the ambience, shorter if you aren’t & don’t. Carnglaze is an important part of Cornish mining history and we deliberately avoid ruining that with gimmicks & theming.

The woodland walk takes around 20 minutes, with plenty of places to sit, listen to the river and contemplate life (whilst the kids play).

Should I book in advance

Absolutely! During busy periods it is essential that you book your visit online to avoid disappointment.
H&S only allows us a certain number of people underground at any one time, so we just can’t allow you entrance if we are already at capacity.

No concert or event tickets are ever sold on the door.

Is there plenty of parking?

There is free parking on site with dedicated low mobility spaces.
On busy days and for larger events, we have an adjacent overflow car park – a short woodland walk from the caverns.
If you are coming as a big group in separate vehicles, particularly for concerts, we encourage you to lift-share as much as possible.

Are the Caverns & Woodland Walks accessible?

Due to the historical nature of the site, specific areas of the gardens and the lower caverns have limited access for those with reduced mobility.

The upper cavern, The Rum Store, is fully accessible, including for wheelchair users.
The lower cavern, has limited access for reduced mobility & wheelchair users, via a ramp to a viewing platform.
The lower cavern levels and underground lake are accessed via a 100 year-old flight of steps with handrails.

The fully accessible upper cavern, The Rum Store, is where the majority of concerts and events are held.

The Terraced Gardens are partially accessible for a short stroll, with plenty of benches amongst the greenery.
The Woodland Walk is fairly wild and steep in places, and is not fully accessible.

May I bring my dog?

Dogs on leads with respectful owners are always welcome in our outdoor areas.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed underground (except trained Assistance Dogs).
For the purposes of clarity and to avoid unnecessary disagreement, an Assistance Dog will:

  • be highly trained
  • not wander freely around the premises
  • sit or lie quietly on the floor next to its owner
  • go to the toilet on command and be unlikely to foul in a public place
  • be instantly recognisable by the harness or identifying dog jacket they wear

Additionally, if Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are clearly trained as above, we will allow access at our discretion. However, as the caverns contain our only source of drinking water, Health & Safety obligations mean that, regretfully, we cannot allow untrained Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) underground.

Please be considerate, clean up and take any dog waste away with you.
Shaded parking spaces are available

Is it cold inside the caverns?

The caverns remain at 10 degrees Centigrade all year round, making them feel cool in Summer and warm in Winter. It might feel a little cold if you’re not used to it and aren’t suitably dressed. A warm jumper or jacket and sensible shoes are recommended.

Can I bring my own food and drink?

If you are visiting the caverns and woods, please feel free to bring your own picnic to eat in the grounds.
Please take your rubbish home with you or use the bins provided.

We do have a licenced cafe with hot and cold drinks and snacks - obviously, we'd appreciate it if you would use the cafe to complement your picnic. Put simply, it pays for the staff wages . . . .

Please do not take any food or drink underground.
Respect the fact that we are a licenced premises and do not bring your own alcohol on site.

Is it safe for children?

It is safe for children, if they bring their responsible adults with them!

Please do not allow children to wander off the paths, play on the loose slate in the caverns, throw things into the lakes or otherwise behave disrespectfully.

Carnglaze is a retired slate mine and comes with all the dangers associated with that – we ask all parents and guardians to be aware.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes you do – it is a basic H&S requirement of us being able to let you into an old mine.
We supply you with sanitised safety helmets when you arrive.

Do I have to wear a face mask?

In accordance with the current government guidelines – no you don’t

What happens if I buy a ticket but can no longer make it?

All day visitor & concert tickets are non-refundable.

In exceptional circumstances, tickets may be transferable at our discretion. Please mail us on hello@carnglaze.com
