MEN, SINGING SONGS. SOME OF THEM ARE FUNNY.
The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a vast, rumbling, steam powered and black clad behemoth, seemingly accidentally capable of rendering audiences moist eyed with mute appreciation or haplessly gurgling with merriment. Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect subwoofer-rattling boofchord, the Spooky Men seek to commentate on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male armed only with their voices, a sly collection of hats and facial hair, and a twinkle in the eye.
Formed in the Blue Mountains of NSW in 2001 by Christchurch born spookmeister Stephen Taberner, the Spooky Men soon attracted attention with a judicious combination of Georgian table songs, pindrop beautiful ballads, highly inappropriate covers, and immaculate man anthems like “Don’t stand between a man and his tool”, all of which amounted to a manifesto for the new breed of man: happily suspended between thug and wimp.
The Spooky Men first attracted wider attention at the National Folk Festival in Canberra, 2004, which led to appearances at Woodford Festival and the first of six tours to the UK in 2006. Standout appearances amongst their 500+ gigs since have included WOMAD, The Great Escape Festival, Woodford, Cobargo, Port Fairy, Blue Mountains and Bellingen festivals. ABC TV appearances include The Mix, Spicks and Specks, and the New Inventors Grand Final.
In the UK/Europe they have appeared at major festivals including Tonder (Denmark), Cambridge, Broadstairs, Wickham, Camp Bestival, Towersey, Shrewsbury, and Edinburgh Fringe. Theatrical venues have included Union Chapel (London), St David’s Hall (Cardiff), The Philharmonic (Liverpool), Colston Hall (Bristol), the Sheldonian (Oxford) and Sage Gateshead.
The Spooky Men have recorded seven CDs: Tooled Up (2004), Stop Scratching It (2007), Deep (2009), Big (2011), The Spooky Man in History (2013), Warm (2015) and Welcome to the Second Half (2019).
In live performance, the Spooky Men draw on a combination of musical and theatrical values which are elusive and multifarious. Notable themes and antecedents include Georgian male polyphony, a running joke on man as a vast, oblivious useless object, whispers of clown, bouffon and Monty Python, and forays into massively pleasurable grunting tribalism. The audience are invited to first joyously endure a wall of mansound, then laugh stupidly, then venture into areas of great tenderness. It is ideally not so much comedic as hilarious, not so much shimmeringly perfect as human in a very deeply resonant way.

Following on from their first 2023 sell-out concert in the caverns, we are extremely excited to welcome back Barrett's Privateers in 2025.
From the deep, resonating notes of the father and son bass to the high notes of the girls, Barrett's Privateers have delighted audiences throughout Cornwall and well beyond with their broad, rich harmonies.
Based on the Cornish side of the beautiful Tamar Valley, Barrett’s Privateers formed with the desire to maintain their tradition of singing in pubs, whilst creating more polished performances to bring their entertaining brand of acapella singing to brand new audiences. Since forming in 2019, the group have been honoured to perform at a range of events from the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, to singing under the Christmas garland at Cotehele, to the highly acclaimed Rock Oyster Festival.
2022 was a fantastic year for Barrett's Privateers. In May, they recorded their debut album, Shed No Tears, at the prestigious Cube Studios and in August, they represented Cornwall at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in Brittany along with seven other Celtic nations, performing each night to a crowd of up to 10,000 people.
Songs of the sea, shanties, traditional folk, Cornish and mining songs all feature regularly on their set lists. Despite being so varied in age, Barrett’s Privateers take each song and make it their own, with each of the voices finding a way to complement its neighbour, through the joy of just singing together.
The power and harmony within their lively performances are both enjoyable and hugely entertaining, both on-stage, and, often, around the bar afterwards.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to his music, this is an unmissable opportunity to witness one of folk music’s most revered figures in a bold new setting.

Support will be provided by True Foxes, an acclaimed folk/americana family duo, who are quickly gaining popularity in the South West and beyond.
Amie, with her soulful vocals and earworm song writing, has been compared to artists such as Brandi Carlile, Karen Carpenter, and Dolly Parton, accompanied by guitar, ukulele, banjo, and piano. Chloë complements Amie's vocals with ethereal harmonies and melodic bass lines. The duo's sisterly banter adds an emotional dimension to their performances.

Sound of the Sirens are a singer-songwriting duo based in Exeter, Devon comprising of Abbe Martin & Hannah Wood. Honing their craft over the past decade, Martin & Wood have cemented themselves as firm favourites as “one of the UK’s finest folk acts” not only on the Westcountry scene, but nationally, and internationally too. Their status, and fast-growing fan-base is not only testament to the pair’s prowess as songwriters and musicians, but as people too.
"Their harmonies are absolutely stunning and their vocal styles complement each other beautifully, as well as being excellent musicians who really know how to bring their songs to life."
Entertainment Focus
Martin & Wood are two of the hardest working musicians on the scene and wear their hearts very much on their sleeves in terms of their songwriting. The pair glide gracefully through laments of past relationships, and life experiences, as well as highlighting the important topics of the day, namely mental health awareness, and homelessness. Without being pigeonholed into any stereotypical genre, the instrumentation of the band is vast, and varied. Martin (stage right) plays acoustic and high-strung (Nashville tuning) guitar, mandolin, and bass drum, while partner in crime Wood (stage left) plays acoustic and electric guitar, tambourine, snare drum, and the piano.
The pairs’ musical and vocal dexterity dovetail beautifully on the co-written songs, which range from beautiful, emotive ballads, to up-beat, foot stomping, hands in the air, sing-along anthems. The dynamic duo and their musical creations translate very well onto recorded media, but it is in the live arena where the pair truly excel. There is a certain majesty about their live performances that simply cannot be put into words. It is this “je ne sais quoi” that keeps their loyal fans returning from far and wide to see these two perform. It is not just nearly two hours of high-quality live music you get for the entrance fee, a Sound of the Sirens show is much more than that. The onstage chemistry, camaraderie, and banter is worth the ticket price alone.
"Beautiful and emotive. Duo Abbe Martin and Hannah Wood of Sound of the Sirens solidify their status as one of the UK’s finest folk acts with their brand new album, ‘Damage Control’."

Returning in 2024, The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines will, once again, be performing a Christmas Spectacular concert in the upper cavern. This really is going to sound awesome!
In addition to its musical, ceremonial role, the Royal Marines Band Service has a long tradition of providing military support to UK Defence. In 2001/2002, the Plymouth Band undertook a six-month deployment to Kosovo as part of Medical Squadron, Commando Logistic Regiment. This was followed by a four-month deployment to the Middle East as a part of Exercise Saif Sareea. During 2002/2003, members of the band were involved in the Armed Forces’ response to Fire Brigade Union industrial action, and provided primary and secondary role support to military operations in Iraq. In 2008/2009, members of Plymouth band deployed to Afghanistan as part of the UK Medical Group and more recently in 2011 the RMBS deployed members of CTCRM Band with 3 Commando Brigade as part of Operation Herrick 14.
In recent years the band has enjoyed many varied and high profile events including support to the 2012 Olympics as well as performing at the Trinidad and Tobago Tattoo in the same year. In 2013 the band supported the 100th Anniversary International Fleet Review in Sydney, Australia which was followed by a three month deployment on HMS Daring. 2014 bought many events celebrating 350 years of the Royal Marines, including performances on Horseguards Parade with the Massed Bands of HM Royal Marines and more locally with the South West Proms concert at Plymouth Albion RFC. In 2015 the band provided support to the Poppy Ball in Abu Dhabi; the largest fund raising event for the Royal British Legion outside of the UK and more recently in 2016 visited New Delhi in India where the band enjoyed the opportunity to work with the Indian Navy Band which culminated in a joint performance at the iconic India Gate Memorial in front of an estimated audience of 8000.
In 2017 the band were centre stage for the Passchendaele commemorations in Ypres before parading in front of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in his last public appearance as the Captain General Royal Marines. They also returned to Abu Dhabi again in support the RBL Poppy Ball. 2018 bought many massed bands commitments where Plymouth band joined the rest of the RMBS at the Mountbatten Festival of Music, Beating Retreat and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Later in the year, the band travelled to Bucharest in Romania to celebrate 100 years since all the historical provinces joined together to make one unified country. 2019 has proved no less busy with the band travelling to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Algeria and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) to celebrate the Queens birthday. The visit to Europe also gave the band the chance to perform as the first military band in the new NATO HQ in Brussels. A visit to Gibraltar in support of the Gibraltar Natwest International Island Games XVIII followed in June, before a flying visit to Canada in support of HMS Queen Elizabeth in September.
2020 started with the band travelling to London to perform at the Mountbatten Festival of Music at the Royal Albert Hall, this including performing for HRH Prince Harry’s final duty as a working Royal before the pandemic bought the country to shut-down. During this time, members of the band took to the internet with many featuring in various on line projects before gradually getting back to performing, the band performing on Horseguards Parade as part of the Tri Service band for the VJ 70 anniversary commemorations in August 2020. In 2021 the band were involved in both HM Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee celebrations as well as being one of the many military contingents for the funeral of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021. They were also involved, as were so many others, at the State funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 before a visit to New York City for performances at the Empire State Building, Central Park and Grand Central Station as well as a performance with Kathrine Jenkins OBE on board HMS Queen Elizabeth as part of the Atlantic Future Forum. A highlight for many came earlier this year when the band were among the military contingents who performed for the coronation of King Charles III in May 2023.
